Those who have travelled to Montreal say that it’s a truly unique holiday destination – and we couldn’t agree more. This city is a fascinating melting pot of cultures, thanks to its location in North America and the large population of French speaking residents. So if you’re looking for a city break like no other, read on to find out why Montreal could be the perfect place to spend your summer holiday this year.
Attractions
So what’s there to do in Montreal? The older part of the city boasts some stunning architecture, including the Basilique Notre Dame and the Place D’Armes. Vieux-Port de Montréal is a great attraction too, with plenty to do for all ages. Be sure to visit the Clock Tower – the views over the port are incredible. The Jardin Botanique is one of the largest botanical gardens in the world, and is a great place for an afternoon stroll or a novel date location. There are plenty of great shops too, so you’ll be sure to come home with plenty of souvenirs.
Restaurants
After Paris, Montreal is the largest French speaking city in the world – and this European influence can be felt all around this cosmopolitan city. There are some restaurants that wouldn’t look out of place in the French capital. L’Express is a typical French bistro, serving up indulgent dishes such as meltingly soft bone marrow with sea salt and delicious beef tartare. Olive & Gourmando is a great place for brunch, with a huge selection of pastries and toasted sandwiches (our favourite is the ham, roast pork and Gruyère). There are plenty of other types of cuisine to try to – the city is home to chefs cooking up incredible Asian fusion, street food and of course, traditional Canadian fare.
Hotels
There are some great hotels in Montreal – so you won’t be stuck for somewhere to stay. Hotels in the city centre may be a little pricier, but they’re among some of the best in North America. Hotel Le Crystal is modern and luxurious, with a rooftop Jacuzzi and fitness centre & spa. Over in Old Montreal, Auberge du Vieux-Port is a stunning period hotel that sits on the Saint Lawrence River. The hotel has 45 beautifully decorated rooms, and the Taverne Gaspar is the perfect place for a drink and something light to eat. If you’re travelling on a budget, the Auberge Pomerol Hotel in downtown Montreal is a great option. A continental breakfast delivered to your door in a basket and a great location close to the Metro are what guests can look forward to.
