See More Of The World With Budget City Breaks

Expand Your Horizons Without Breaking The Bank

King's Landing, Dubrovnik

King’s Landing, Dubrovnik

City breaks are rising in popularity and it’s easier than ever before to get away on a budget. We’ve put together some great suggestions for your next trip.

City breaks are growing in popularity with more British holiday makers choosing this type of trip over the traditional beach holiday. And with so many cities combining historical and cultural attractions with beautiful scenery and great entertainment, it’s easy to see why this is such a popular choice.

What’s more, research has shown that taking several mini breaks throughout the year makes people happier than taking just one longer holiday.

Another benefit of city breaks is that they enable you to experience more of the world without breaking the bank. And, with the continued growth of budget airlines, voucher websites such as Groupon, and alternative accommodation options such as Airbnb, it’s easier than ever to get away on a relatively small budget. For regular travellers, our annual multi trip insurance policy is usually the most cost effective way to stay covered.

Tempted? Here are some great city break ideas to inspire your next trip.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a great destination for budget-conscious travellers, costing up to a third less than other popular European destinations. However, Hungary’s capital city has much more to offer holiday makers than just low prices. Nicknamed ‘The Paris of the East’, Budapest is a city of contrasts combining a vibrant nightlife and youthful atmosphere with a well-respected classical music scene, stunning architecture and a fascinating and complex history.

Venice, Italy

If it’s romance you want from your city break then you can’t beat a trip to Venice in north-eastern Italy. Climb the Campanile in St Mark’s square for panoramic views over the city, cruise the canals in a gondola (sharing a kiss as you go under the famous Bridge of Sighs), or simply allow yourself to get lost in the quaint backstreets and soak up the atmosphere. While you may pay through the nose to eat or drink on the main piazzas, if you stick to the quieter, less touristy areas, you will find eating out to be a much cheaper and more authentic experience.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

This Unesco World Heritage site on the south coast of Croatia is the perfect location for a city getaway, combining natural beauty with culture and history. The magnificent old town offers beautiful baroque buildings, cobbled streets and plenty of museums and churches to explore. Walk along the top of the ancient city walls for great views of the Adriatic, or if the weather allows, relax on one of the nearby white pebble beaches.

Prague, Czech Republic

If you’re looking for beautiful scenery, a rich history and great beer then you might want to visit Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. Travellers to the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’ can experience gothic churches, colourful baroque buildings, a historic old town square, and the famous Charles Bridge which is lined with statues of 30 saints. It’s also easy on the purse strings with a recent study declaring it to be one of the cheapest major European cities for eating out.

This is just a small sample of available destinations – there are so many great cities out there to explore. Of course, the advantage of budget city breaks is that you can often fit in more than one trip a year. So, if you can’t decide on just the one destination, you might want to think about purchasing our annual multi trip insurance which will cover you for the whole year. Happy exploring!
