Covering your trip to Spain against FCDO advice

Even with the FCDO advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain, adding our European FCO Travel Advice Extension to your policy can give you a level of cover if you need to travel and feel safe to go. You can make the choice yourself, based on how you feel and know we’ll be there to put things right if the unexpected crops up.

Right now, travel advice is changing all the time. So, it’s really important you keep in the know with the FCDO’s travel advice before you set off, and while you’re away too. If you haven’t added our European FCO Travel Advice Extension to your policy but decide to go ahead with your trip, we wouldn’t be able to cover you if you needed our help.

Once the FCDO name Spain as safe to visit again, you can travel with extra reassurance, with medical expenses cover caused by COVID-19 included with all new policies, for not a penny more. Now, isn’t that what you’d call good peace of mind?

As of 28 October 2020, the FCDO added the Canary Islands to their exempt list. They still advise against all non-essential travel to all of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.

How up-to-date travel insurance can protect you against the unexpected

The day before Liz1 was due to go on holiday, she was diagnosed with a new medical condition and sadly, her doctor told her it wasn’t safe for her to travel.

She gave us a call and we accepted her claim for the cancellation of her holiday. Three days later, Liz was thrilled that the money was in her bank account.

Nothing can ease the disappointment of not being able to travel, but having a good policy with cancellation cover can help to soften the blow.

Why do I need travel insurance for Spain?

While Spain may be a familiar destination, the unexpected can happen on holiday at any time, meaning travel insurance is essential.

Things going wrong on your travels can vary from lost luggage or stolen passport, to a serious medical emergency. Thankfully, a policy with us means you can relax knowing help is there when you need it most.

Do I need to tell you about my medical condition?

It’s important to let us know about any pre-existing health conditions you may have. When you get in touch for your quote, we’ll ask you a few questions about your health and how it impacts your daily life. That way we can make sure you have a policy that meets your travel and health needs.

We understand that talking about your health may be a sensitive topic, which is why we’ll take you through the questions at a pace that suits you. We’ll never rush you.

If you forget to let us know of any health conditions you have, this may affect the validity of your policy and a claim being accepted if you need us further down the line.

What destinations are classed as Spain for travel insurance?

Whether you’re taking a city break to Barcelona or a week’s family stay in Tenerife, you can get travel insurance that’s personalised to you.

The following destinations are classed under Spain for travel insurance:

  • Spain

The Baleric Islands:

  • Mallorca
  • Menorca
  • Ibiza
  • Formentera

The Canary Islands, including:

  • Tenerife
  • Lanzarote
  • Fuerteventura
  • Gran Canaria

I have an EHIC. Do I still need travel insurance for Spain?

While the United Kingdom is still a member of the European Union, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you access to free or subsidised state healthcare in most European countries.

If you have a valid medical claim on your travel insurance, your EHIC will cover any excess payment you may have to make. Your EHIC won’t cover you for cancelling your trip, cutting your holiday short or for the theft or loss of any personal possessions.

While carrying an EHIC is an essential condition of your policy, it’s not a substitute for a good travel insurance policy.
