Record numbers of Brits are flying to South Africa to enjoy several weeks on safari, a new study claims, with dramatically-fluctuating exchange rates having a direct impact on the popularity of the holiday type.

While the Big Five – lions, African elephants, Cape buffalo, leopards and rhinoceroses – have always had a large audience, industry specialists Travel Butlers have reported an enormous surge in interest since as recently as 2012.

“Two years ago, one pound was worth around 12 South African Rand,” explained Paul Campbell, managing director for the company. “This has gradually changed over time and in January 2014 one pound was worth around 18 Rand on average.”

This, Mr Campbell pointed out, indicated that holidaymakers are now getting around 50 per cent more bang for their buck, before taking into account special rates that many travel dealers offer in order to entice their target audience.

However, that’s not to say it’s been entirely easy in recent times, with South Africa’s reputation as being good value for money becoming damaged during the time of the Football World Cup in 2010.

“Many hotels started to charge five star prices for three star services, and visitor numbers suffered a bit as a result,” Mr Campbell said. “It has taken a couple of years, however we believe that South Africa is now better value for money than ever before.”

He added that this can only be good news for all involved, including those involved in the industry such as hoteliers and airlines, as well as the consumer.

Safari holidays that involve seeing South Africa’s vast array of wildlife are a splendid way of rewarding yourself and your loved ones, and they’re often described as a once-in-a-lifetime event.

However, don’t get carried away with all the excitement and ensure your travel insurance arrangements are up to scratch before you fly.
