Popular European beach destinations for summer 2017
If you’re planning a summer beach break, it’s best to book it soon, especially if you’re restricted by school holiday dates. Here are some of the most popular European beach holiday destinations this year.
Portugal offers great value for money, and has some fantastic beaches. The Algarve is famous for its golden sands, and is the country’s most popular holiday region. If you’d like somewhere quieter, head for the Silver Coast, north of Lisbon, for stunning sandy beaches, laid-back resorts and some world-class surfing – the largest wave ever surfed was at the pretty coastal town of Nazaré.
Spain is becoming more popular than ever with UK visitors – but it’s not all about mass tourism. Some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain are in the North of the country, in the rugged Asturias region. The Costa Brava has some very attractive, traditional seaside resorts, including places such as Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, and Cadaqués, where artist Salvador Dalí had a summer house.
Croatia is now firmly established as one of the best European beach destinations. With a stunning Adriatic coastline and interesting historical coastal towns, it’s a great place to enjoy a relaxing break. There are more than 1,000 islands dotted along the Croatian coast, and it’s easy to take a ferry from the mainland to explore whichever islands you happen to be nearest to. The medieval walled city of Dubrovnik is a highlight of the Dalmatian Coast, and has some excellent places to stay nearby.
Italy’s always a popular destination for a summer trip, and has some beautiful coastal towns. Friendly Cefalù on the island of Sicily is one of our favourite holiday destinations. It has a long sandy beach and some outstanding places to eat. On the mainland, Puglia has some of the best beaches in the country and is an increasingly popular holiday destination for Brits.
Some of the world’s best beaches are in the UK, and more and more people are opting to risk the weather and stay here for their summer break. Top beaches include Barafundle Bay in South West Wales and Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. My favourite UK beaches are in the Isles of Scilly, a spectacular archipelago off the coast of Cornwall.
