New York most photographed city

New York continues to lead the way

New York continues to lead the way

As city break destinations go, they don’t come much more exhilarating than New York, and the Big Apple has just reaffirmed its status as one of the world’s top metropolises by being named the most photographed city of 2013 by the photo sharing company Instagram.

Instagram is a mobile phone app that lets users share their holiday snaps with others, and large numbers of people were keen to show off photos of their visits to the world famous Times Square, which placed on the top ten Most-Instagrammed Locations of 2013.

Also making the top ten landmarks list was the city’s Central Park, which is a haven of green space among the sea of skyscrapers, and the High Line, another public park built on an historic freight rail line passing above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side.

US destinations dominated both top tens – perhaps unsurprising given that Instagram is an American invention – with Disneyland, Disney World, the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas, and the Staples Center and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles all making the Most-Instagrammed Locations list, with Los Angeles, San Diego, Sin City and San Francisco joining New York on the Most-Instagrammed Cities chart.

However, photo sharing is also growing in popularity in other locations, with Bangkok proving particularly prominent.

“In the course of the past year, we’ve seen Instagram continue to grow across the globe,” the company said.

“We’ve been amazed to see the community thrive in places like Indonesia, Russia and Brazil. 60 per cent of Instagrammers are now sharing photos and videos from outside the United States, so we wanted to also share the most-Instagrammed cities in the world.”

New York’s domination of the Instagram chart may have something to do with the fact that visitors to the Empire State have increased by 8.8 million over the past year to almost 219 million, according to official figures.

The local tourism board has also been trying to encourage tourists to visit the state’s other attractions beside New York itself.
