Kids Left Home? Time for a Child Free Holiday!

Cruise ship restaurantThe Top Destinations For a Peaceful Break

If your children have left home, why not combat the ‘empty nest’ syndrome by treating yourself and your partner to a relaxing adults-only getaway?

When your children leave home, you can sometimes be left wondering what to do with your time. Going on holiday is a great way of reconnecting with your partner and taking some quality time out for yourselves.

After 20 or so years of family holidays, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to a relaxing, tranquil and child-free break.

Tropical Resorts

Generally speaking, long-haul destinations tend to be less popular with families, particularly outside of the main school holidays. So, a tropical resort could be your best bet if you have your heart set on a relaxing beach holiday, particularly if you head for a luxury development with a private beach. The Caribbean, Mexico and the Pacific Islands are all well known for their secluded, romantic resorts, and their white sand beaches, beautiful scenery and focus on relaxation make them hugely popular with holidaying couples.

However, if you would prefer not to travel that far, Europe also has some fantastic adults-only options. The Restia Suites in Corfu, for example, is an elegant boutique hotel offering privacy, luxury and the beautiful Almiros Bay right on your doorstep.

Luxury Cruises

Going on a cruise is the perfect way to pack several destinations into just one holiday, and they are soaring in popularity amongst all kinds of holiday makers. If this is something that appeals to you, consider booking a place on a luxury liner, which tends to be less popular with families.

For a truly kid-free experience opt for an ‘adults only’ cruise. P&O’s Arcadia line offers mid-sized cruise ships which are open exclusively to adults. With a focus on relaxation and pampering, Arcadia travels to a variety of far flung destinations, including the Far East, the Pacific Islands or the USA. If you prefer to stay closer to home, it also offers cruises to popular destinations throughout Europe.

Spa Breaks

If you’re looking for a holiday that will help you to relax, rejuvenate and unwind, then a spa break is the obvious choice. It’s a great way to spend quality time and reconnect with your partner as you test out all the treatments and activities on offer. When it comes to spa breaks, there are a number of options to choose from. Whether you prefer a UK stately home or a tropical beach spa, a re-energising fitness retreat or complete and utter relaxation, you’re bound to find something that suits – and you’re virtually guaranteed a child-free experience. Take a look at our favourite European spa breaks.

Hit the Slopes

If relaxation and indulgence leave you feeling restless, and you’re looking for something a little more active, why not head to the slopes on a skiing or snowboarding holiday?

A number of tour operators throughout Europe offer adults-only holidays or adults-only chalets during certain times of the year, leaving you free to enjoy your skiing experience in the company of other like-minded adults. Skiing is a healthy activity, just don’t forget to take out some over 50s travel insurance to cover you in case of any mishaps on the slopes (terms and conditions and age limits apply).

Timing is Key

When it comes to a child-free getaway, timing is everything. With school holidays come crowds (and lots of children!), particularly for UK resorts and short-haul package holiday destinations. So, if your trip coincides with the school holidays you may find peace and relaxation difficult to find – June and early July is the best time to avoid school children and families during the summer months. Booking your holiday in the ‘off season’ will get you a more tranquil experience, and there are some great deals to be had when you book during the quieter months.

When it comes to holidays for child-free couples there are plenty of options out there. Whether you want the indulgence of an all-inclusive beach resort, the variety of a cruise trip, or the adrenaline rush of a skiing trip, you’re sure to find an adults-only holiday that meets your requirements. Then all you need to do is kick back, let you hair down and enjoy the peace and quiet.
