Happy family on the beachMust-Visit Destinations in the Happiest Countries in the World

Happiness means different things to different people – from exploring a city to experiencing the wonders of nature.

In today’s modern world, it’s all too easy to forget what life’s really about. We’re often stressed, tired and unhappy, just from struggling to keep up with the frenetic pace of everyday life. If that sounds like you, then perhaps you need to take a little breather. When better to do that than on the International Day of Happiness? Taking place on the 20th of March, it’s a chance to rediscover what really makes you happy. Here’s what makes the happiest countries in the world so special – each of the destinations suggested below are in Live Science’s ten happiest countries in the world. The UK is ranked 44th on the list.

Natural Wonders

For some, true happiness means reconnecting with nature. A trek through the lush rainforests of Panama would lift anyone’s spirits. The same goes for a day spent in the Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal, a sprawling park at the foot of a stunning dormant volcano in Costa Rica. Another of the most spectacular sights in the world is the Blue Hole in the oceans of Belize, which is a must-dive for any serious adventurer.

Vibrant Cities

Happiness can also be found just by wandering around a city and discovering things at your own pace. A great afternoon can be had exploring the shops and restaurants in the Puerto Rican city of San Juan, with its beautiful brightly coloured buildings.

The same goes for a day spent taking in the sights of the Chilean capital of Santiago. Here you’ll find clubs, museums and restaurants – not to mention that awe-inspiring mountainous view. Chichicastenango in Guatamala is home to some of the best markets in the world, where you can really immerse yourself in the old-world magic of the city.

Famous Sights

Seeing a world-famous landmark, natural or otherwise, is guaranteed to put a spring in your step. The Matterhorn in Switzerland is one of the most spectacular mountains in the world, especially when seen from a cable car or the Gornergratbahn, one of Europe’s highest railways.

Another famous sight is Mexico’s Chichen Itza, the most impressive of the country’s ancient Mayan cities. Exploring it at sunrise or sunset is simply spine-tingling.

Waterside Retreats

There’s something really relaxing about spending some time by the water. The district of Nyhavn in Denmark is famous for the colourful houses that line the canal – in our minds, there are few better places to relax with a drink and watch the boats bob on the water.

You’ll find the world-famous lakes of Austria are just as captivating though. The bright blue waters of Wörthersee are best experienced from a boat. When the sun filters through the lush green trees and onto the lake, it’s easy to forget all of your worries.

Getting the Right Cover

With locations as stunning as these, it’s no wonder the residents of these countries are the happiest in the world! If you want to join them for a week or two this year, then don’t forget your single trip cover. Once you’re insured, you can concentrate on discovering what makes you happy rather than worrying about if anything was to go wrong during your trip.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

Whether you’re going to celebrate International Happiness Day in one of these locations or use our list as the inspiration for the most fulfilling trip ever, one thing’s for sure. From the first day of your holiday until your last, you won’t be able to wipe the smile off of your face! So what are you waiting for? True happiness is only a plane ticket away!
