easyJet, one of Europe’s favourite short-haul budget airlines, has made passengers very happy today as they will now be allowed to keep their electronic devices switched on during takeoff and landing.

The irritating period from taxi to cruising – during which we’re constantly reminded that all tablets, mobile phones, DVD players and laptops must be switched off – has long been a bit of a bugbear for frequent fliers.

Indeed, for some airports, the journey to the runway can take as long as 15 minutes, depending on where the aircraft is parked, and parents know it doesn’t take long for kids to get bored.

However, following recommendations from the European Aviation Safety Agency, the rules that stipulated devices had to be turned off have now been relaxed, allowing passengers to continue watching films, reading e-books, working or drafting emails.

The change has been a long time coming, with the agency’s US equivalent confirming last November that there is little evidence personal electronic devices can disrupt instruments during takeoff and landing.

British Airways was among the first to implement the new rules, relaxing its restrictions from December 2013, although pilots currently ask passengers to switch their devices to in-flight mode if they have one.

It’s a stipulation that easyJet has copied, according to Peter Duffy, easyJet group commercial director, customer, product and marketing.

“We know that portable devices are an important part of our customers’ journey with us so we are pleased they can now use their electronic devices onboard in ‘Flight mode’ for the duration of their flight with us – we think this will be a popular change.”
