We’re kicking off the new year with some good news in travel!
Covid testing has been relaxed for fully vaccinated travellers heading back to the UK, which has, in turn, encouraged a boost in holiday bookings.
And, on top of all of that, we’re on track for another great year for the great British staycation.

Covid tests eased for fully vaccinated returning to the UK
As of 9 January 2022, fully vaccinated travellers (including under 18s and people who are exempt) no longer need to take a pre-departure test before returning to the UK.
Travellers will still need to take a PCR or lateral flow test on or before their second day back but they won’t have to self isolate while they wait for the results.
These new changes only apply to fully vaccinated travellers returning to the UK from countries on the ‘rest of the world list’. The rules for non-vaccinated travellers remain the same.
The rules for returning from a red list country also remain the same, and apply to everyone, regardless of vaccination status. Find out more on our travelling during coronavirus blog.
Holiday bookings surge following latest travel update
A number of holiday providers have reported a surge of bookings and enquiries since the government announced the testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers would be relaxed.
Jet2 said demand had returned to pre-pandemic levels following the news, with an increase of 150% in bookings the following day!
EasyJet also reported a nearly-200% increase in bookings compared to the week before the news. British tourist-staples Tenerife, Alicante, Malaga, and Lanzarote saw the biggest increase.
Staycations are poised for another big year
While many seem to be getting their bags packed for a summer holiday abroad, plenty are still looking closer to home for a trip away.
Domestic tourism is set to have another massive year in the UK, with the holiday provider Independent Cottages reporting a 170% increase in website visitors and a 200% increase in booking enquiries.
These figures, taken from the start of 2022 and compared to the start of 2021, tell us that many UK holidaymakers are still considering a holiday in the UK a great option.
With so much to enjoy, from beaches to city breaks, on our doorstep – it’s a great option every year!
