Improve Your Health On Holiday During British Heart Week

Improving your heart health is one of the best things that you can do to increase your overall wellbeing. Why not start while you’re on holiday this year?

June 7th marks the start of this year’s British Heart Week and 2016’s awareness week looks set to be bigger than ever. Numerous events are planned throughout the United Kingdom, all of which are hoping to raise awareness of one of the biggest killers facing modern society today.

Small Changes Can Make A Big Difference

Two of the key drivers of heart disease are high cholesterol and excess weight. Improving the way that we eat can go a long way to reducing our risk from heart attacks as we age. Cutting down on the amounts that we eat and getting more exercise can be great ways to make a start, but we often put such changes off until after we get back from holiday. Why not do things a little differently this year?

Instead of doing what you normally would (make a promise to be good when you get home), why not incorporate your new zest for health and vitality into the holiday itself? There are plenty of ways that you can make a great start to your new commitment while you are away, and the relaxed atmosphere of a holiday destination can be the perfect place to slowly bring in the changes.

Get Moving

While you are away, try to make a commitment to not just lie on the beach all day, but to get up and get moving. You can take an early morning stroll down to the harbour before the sun reaches its peak, or even organise an excursion that will involve a little more movement than is usually required when lazing on a sun lounger.

Better yet, why not book a walking holiday? There are a growing number of providers catering for those who like to take in the scenery on foot, and you don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to get the full benefit of what they have to offer. Just make sure that you check the difficulty of the walks involved before booking. Most websites will have a ratings system that will allow you to make the right choice according to your ability. All you need to do then is book your flights, get some single trip travel insurance, check your activities are covered and you’re away!

Change Your Food

Another great way to begin your journey to better heart health is to change your diet, and trips abroad can be an ideal opportunity to broaden your culinary horizons. Unfortunately, however, many of us use our holidays as an excuse to overindulge.

Why not spin that on its head this year and make an effort to start your new way of life while you are away. Visiting places such as Italy and Greece will give you the perfect opportunity to experience the renowned Mediterranean diet; a diet that has been touted as being one of the healthiest in world.

Enjoy the fresh produce and cut back on the amount of red and processed meat that you eat while you are away. Again, holiday destinations provide the perfect setting for such changes, as the warm weather naturally encourages you to eat less and more healthily anyway.

Remember, small changes can make a huge difference, so why not decide to bring in the changes while you are away this year? Your heart will love you for it.
