Who can we offer cover to

Before we offer anyone cover for their pre-existing medical conditions, we have to check whether they are fit and able to travel on their planned trips. The same applies to travelling when you are waiting for surgery or investigations.

To be covered by an Avanti Travel Insurance policy, you must be fit and able to go on your planned trip and not be doing any of the following:

    • you are not travelling against the advice of a doctor (this includes travelling against their advice if you had sought it)
    • you are not travelling with the intention of receiving treatment, having tests or consultations when you are abroad
    • you are not travelling after being given a terminal prognosis

We will not be able to cover you for any of your pre-existing medical conditions if you have undiagnosed symptoms that may need attention, or investigations planned for the future.

If you are waiting for an investigation, consultation or for test results where the underlying cause of your illness is unknown, we are unable to cover this, or any other pre-existing conditions, until you’ve received a diagnosis and have been told that you are safe to travel by a doctor.

I have cancer and I’m waiting for treatment, will I be able to get travel insurance

If you have cancer and are awaiting surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, then we may still be able to offer you some cover, but would not be able to cover any pre-existing conditions. That means you wouldn’t be covered for anything that could be a result of your pre-existing conditions, like having to cancel your trip.

If you are waiting for a medical procedure, such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy we are unable to offer you full cover until you have been signed off by your doctor and no longer require treatment.

What should I do if you can’t offer me cover?

If we are unable to provide you with the right level of cover, we can signpost you to suitable cover with other trusted travel insurance providers.

The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) can assist you in finding an alternative travel insurance provider for your medical condition.

Awaiting a medical procedure or surgery

You might be surprised to hear that there are certain surgeries that we can cover, even if you haven’t yet been signed off by your doctor from this treatment, provided that you aren’t travelling against their advice.

So if you have had, or are waiting for, one of the following procedures, we can still offer you full cover, except if you cancel or cut short your holiday due to this condition:

Types of surgery we can cover you for

Adenoidectomy Arthroscopic ligament repair
Arthroscopy of ankle, knee or hip Audiogram

I’ve recently had a medical procedure but haven’t been signed off, can I still get travel insurance?

It’s important to check with your doctor that they are happy that you are safe to travel after you have had a medical procedure.

Before we will consider covering you for a condition that you have medical investigations or surgery for, you will have to be signed off by your doctor from this surgery, unless agreed by us in writing.

If your medical procedure is mentioned in the table above, it’s good news! As long as you don’t need to cancel your holiday or cut it short due to the condition or for this surgery, we can fully cover you.

I’ve just received a new diagnosis, can I get cover for my condition now?

Once you have been given a diagnosis, we might be able to cover you for holidays on land or you could even get an exclusive policy for cruises providing that the diagnosis doesn’t require you to have surgery or further investigations as mentioned above.

To get a quote for travel insurance that covers your newly diagnosed condition, you can get a quote online or call our UK Contact Centre to get a quote that meets your needs on 0800 888 6195.
