2017 Is The Year to Visit Canada!
There are a million reasons to visit this amazing country, I visited for the first time back in September and loved every minute, it is such a friendly place and they really know how to have a good time! With some of the most spectacular national parks on the planet filled with incredible wildlife, the Canadian Rockies, glaciers, beautiful blue lakes, some of the most fun filled cities I have ever experienced, Canada is screaming out to be explored, it is one of the most rewarding destinations I have ever been to.
Getting to Canada has never been cheaper either. There are a whole host of airlines entering the transatlantic marketplace fighting for your custom and this is really driving the price down. We flew with WestJet to Toronto, previously an airline providing domestic flights in North America who have begun operating transatlantic flights. WOW air and Icelandair offer flights to Canada and the east coast of America with a stopover in Iceland at no additional cost to the total, all with very competitive prices. Try exploring the Skyscanner, TripAdvisor, Opodo, and Expedia websites to search for flights and you may be surprised at how affordable these flights have become.
As if you needed anymore convincing…2017 is Canada’s 150th birthday! They were already well into preparing for the celebrations during our visit, completing building work, completing installations, making sure everything is going to be at its sparkling best for visitors! This is going to be a huge event which will centre around a huge party on 1st July (Canada Day) but there are events all year marking the occasion. Canada’s capital, Ottawa will be the centre of attention for many of the events and they have their own dedicated website full of information about what’s on during the celebrations (www.ottawa2017.ca).
I really loved Ottawa, it is the happiest and most friendly city I can remember visiting. With a vibrant independent restaurant, café and bar scene it is a lovely city to spend time in. The world class museums and art galleries there are also well worth a visit.
If I had to pick one city to join in with the celebrations though it would have to be Montreal. This city has an extra reason to party, it will see its own 375th birthday in the same year! Every weekend there seems to be another celebration or festival planned, there is a schedule which is jam packed full of events here.
The old Olympic park is now host to the brilliant Biodome and Planetarium, the beautiful botanical gardens and insectarium are also nearby providing stacks of family fun. There are the islands of Ile Sainte-Helene and Ile Notre Dame in the St Laurence River. Ile Sainte-Helene has a really nice park and the Montreal Biodome, Ile Notre Dame hosts the Canadian Grand Prix for Formula 1 fans (9th-11th June 2017). The spectacular Casino Montreal is also found here, this is much more than a casino, imagine Vegas style with all the restaurants shows and entertainment you can think of! There is the strong French influence here as well to add to the experience, a real fun loving city.
Then of course not far from these amazing cities, around an hour and a half by train from Toronto is the place which I think first gave me the travel bug! The place I can first remember seeing a picture of and saying “I want to go there!”. Niagara Falls the city has a kind of Marmite reputation (you either love it or you hate it!) it has its fair amount of cheesy sights, and more Elvis impersonators than I saw in Las Vegas even, but the falls themselves are still one of the most breathtaking sights I have ever seen. Taking a trip on the Maid of The Mist boat ride so close to the falls is something which will stay with me forever!
