17th June – It’s Flip Flop Day: Why They Are The Perfect Seaside Shoe
Everything You Need to Know About These Holiday Essentials
Dust off your trusty flip flops for the 17th June – this year’s celebration of the most popular item in our summer wardrobes.
As soon as the weather warms up, you’ll see them everywhere. Yes, we’re talking about flip flops. They’re the summer staple in our wardrobe and are a favourite amongst many travellers. They even have their own annual celebration – the third Friday of June is recognised all over the world as Flip Flop Day. So what makes the humble flip flop so popular – and when did we first start wearing them? Read on to find out everything you need to know about this summertime shoe – and why you should pack a pair in your suitcase.
Named flip flops because of the distinctive slapping sound they make when you walk in them, they’re not a recent modern invention. There is evidence that we’ve been wearing them for thousands of years. Egyptian murals discovered in recent times show portraits of ancient Egyptians wearing them in 4000 BC. They date even further back than that though, as some cave paintings depict them – and those are dated to around 15,000 years ago.
Millions Of New Fans
From then onwards, people all over the world have been wearing flip flops. They caught on in Europe after the soldiers fighting in Japan in WWII and Korea in the 1950’s bought home the sandals that all the locals were wearing. From then on, it was love. The flip flop industry is now worth an astonishing amount of money – more than twenty billion dollars!
What Makes Them Great?
So we now know all about their history – but why do modern holidaymakers love flip flops so much? Well, there are a multitude of reasons. Firstly, they’re lightweight and don’t take up much room in your luggage – perfect if you’re trying to keep to an airline’s strict weight guidelines. Secondly, they’re perfect for barefoot walks on the sand – you can take them off when you fancy a stroll, pop them in your bag and then put them back on without putting up with sand trapped in your shoes for weeks. Thirdly, they’re great value. You can usually walk into any high street store and find a pair that are comfortable, stylish and won’t break the bank. It’s no wonder we’re always snapping them up!
Tread Carefully on Holiday
If you’re packing some flip flops in your suitcase and jetting off somewhere sunny, don’t forget your worldwide travel insurance. Just like your favourite shoes, it’s a must have for your trip. You’ll be covered for almost any eventuality, from illness to loss of property (subject to terms of conditions).
