Virgin Atlantic trials Google Glass
The revolutionary Google Glass technology is about to make its way into the air in a big way, with Virgin Atlantic announcing it will be kitting its cabin crew out with the gadget as part of a six-week trial on wearable tech.
Developed by the search engine and technology giant, the space-age spectacles allow users to receive updates, maps and other useful information right in front of their retinas, and they will revolutionise passenger expectations aboard flights, according to Virgin Atlantic.
In addition to Google Glass, a wealth of wearable tech options will be trialled on select flights in the Upper Class areas, including the Sony SmartWatch 2, which will be used to retain information about passenger preferences.
It is hoped that staff will eventually be able to offer a more personalised service to passengers with the use of the extra technology, greeting them by name and anticipating their dietary requirements.
Dave Bulman Director of IT for Virgin Atlantic, explained why the airline has thrown itself into making sure its cabin crew have access to the latest gadgets.
“While it’s fantastic that more people can now fly than ever before, the fact that air travel has become so accessible has led to some of the sheen being lost for many passengers,” he said.
“By being the first in the industry to test how Google Glass and other wearable technology can improve customer experience, we are upholding Virgin Atlantic’s long tradition of shaking things up and putting innovation at the heart of the flying experience.”
The move was also put forward following the publication of a recent poll by research consultancy Populus, which found a significant number of passengers desired a more “sci-fi” experience aboard their flights.
More than half (55 per cent) of participants said Wifi in the air would be their most desired inclusion, while almost three quarters (73 per cent) voiced concerns about noise pollution.
