Thrilling Road Trips For Petrol Heads
Enjoy A Driving Holiday Along These Iconic Roads
If you’re a serious petrol head, then be inspired by these amazing road trip ideas along some of the world’s most picturesque and adventurous driving routes.
Lying on a beach for a fortnight may be the idea of heaven for many people, but if cars are your serious passion, then why not book a fly-drive holiday for your next big trip. You’ll get to put in numerous hours behind the wheel whilst enjoying some beautiful scenery and taking in some amazing destinations along the way. Here are some of the best road trips for petrol heads around the world.
Verdon Gorge Circuit, Provence
Beginning in Lorgues, this 115 mile route takes in Europe’s version of the Grand Canyon – the Verdon gorges. This is a beautiful drive through one of France’s most spectacular regions. You will drive along roads next to dramatic 2,000 foot drops, so those with vertigo should choose a different route. The road trip is best enjoyed in late spring or towards the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. It would be wise to avoid this region in the height of summer due to crowds, and in the winter also because you won’t have the clearest views.
Pan-American Highway – North, Central and South America
This mammoth road trip connects 30,000 miles of branch roads starting from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, travelling through Canada and back into the US where you can take one of many Interstate roads to reach Laredo in Mexico. It is from here that the official Pan-American Highway begins and cuts through every Central American capital city with the exception of Tegucigalpa in Honduras. The remarkable road then heads down the west coast of South America taking in cities such as Ecuador’s Quito and Peru’s Lima. Eventually the road cuts across Chile and ends up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This amazing road trip gives you access to some fantastic destinations and cultures. It can be done in portions depending on how much time you have at your disposal.
Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway
This Norwegian road is regularly touted as being the world’s most scenic road and is often used as a filming location for car adverts. The route takes you right out to the edge of the ocean which allows drivers to experience some truly wondrous coastal scenery between the towns of Kristiansund and Molde. There are many designated stopping places along the road where you can take your time and climb a hillock whilst enjoying the salty air and breath-taking views.
Skippers Canyon, New Zealand
Located just outside of Queenstown, this is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. However, as you would expect from New Zealand’s South Island it is also one of the most scenic. The 16.5 mile road was carved into the canyon around 140 years ago. It is only wide enough for one vehicle and features a sheer drop off the cliff face for drivers that take a wrong turn. Unfortunately, your rental insurance won’t cover you if you choose to drive on this road and you will also need to acquire a permit. If you’d still like to experience this beautiful road in all its glory, then you can always book a four wheel drive tour with a company such as Nomad Safaris and perhaps even take a bungee jump as part of the adventure.
If you are planning to take a driving holiday for your next trip, then always take out some Avanti travel insurance before you depart to provide you with peace of mind.
