Take a trip to Valladolid
We thought it might be an idea to look at some ‘different’ destinations to travel to on a budget airline like Ryanair or Easyjet. We will check out a new destination each time and write up a feature for you. Destinations will be different from the usual suspects and will offer you an alternative for a city break or a holiday.
First stop: Spain.
Valladolid is a 2 hour flight from the UK and is situated North West of Madrid. In fact, if you are going to Madrid, flying to Vallodolid and taking a transfer can be a much cheaper option. Valladolid is ideal for a city break or as a starting point for a Spanish touring holiday.
A very traditional Spanish town, it has a population of almost 320,000 people and it is the biggest city in North West Spain.
There is a wonderful old town with historic houses, palaces, churches, plazas, avenues and parks, along with a heritage museum which features the National Museum of Sculpture, the Museum of Contemporary Art Patio Herreriano and the Oriental Museum.
The best time to go is probably Holy Week (Semana Santa). The street processions taking place at this time have been declared an event of International Tourist Interest. A real sight to be seen, and heard, thousands of visitors comes to the city during Holy Week.
Whilst in Valladolid, check out the Cathedral. Designed by Juan de Herrera, in the 16th Century, the architect’s project was commissioned by Philip II.
Unfortunately the building was never completed due to lack of funds. Construction did continue for a while under the Baroque architect Churriguera. The cathedral still retains elements of Herrara’s original design. The magnificent building incorporates the Church of Santa María la Antigua, founded by Count Ansúrez. Here you can see the beautiful tower and portico from the Romanesque era (13th century) which was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 14th century.
Foodies can enjoy the National Pinchos and Tapas Competition, where professionals in the catering industry compete for the Asamblea de la Tapa (Tapas Conference). Valladolid will be transformed into the world tapas capital for two days and nights, when the city’s bars and restaurants will offer culinary creations from all of Spain’s regions.
