Rise in pre-diabetes indicated among UK public

New research has revealed that there has been a jump in the amount of adults at risk of developing diabetes, news which could potentially affect those looking for travel insurance policies.

It comes after a team of researchers analysed data from the Health Survey for England from the years 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2011. The results were worrying, with the amount of people with symptoms of pre-diabetes in England tripling in just five years.

With more than three million people in the UK already suffering from diabetes, it is a condition that many of us have to take into consideration when organising single trip travel insurance  for holiday plans for the year.

Pre-diabetes – or borderline diabetes – takes place when someone presents blood glucose levels that are higher than normal. As part of the study, researchers categorised that people without previous diabetes diagnosis who had a glycated haemoglobin level, a measure of blood glucose control, between 4.6 per cent and 6.4 per cent have pre-diabetes.

It’s this rise in pre-diabetes that has led experts to believe that unless measures are put in place, there could be a huge rise in the number of diabetes sufferers in the coming years. As diabetes can lead to a number of serious conditions, such as heart disease, stroke amputation and blindness, it is important to consider the effects of this substantial rise.

This rise in the prevalence of diabetes highlights the importance for travellers to obtain the

right insurance, with Avanti among the best names in the business for offering medical travel insurance covering pre-existing conditions, including diabetes. Choosing this type of cover means that you can head off on your holidays with complete peace of mind.
